Michael Broderick
Michael Broderick, a multi-instrumentalist with a master’s in piano performance, performs Celtic music on fiddle, mandolin, Irish flute, and tenor banjo. A seasoned church musician and Renaissance ensemble member, he’s recorded four albums and passionately explores traditions like podorythmie, enriching West Virginia’s music scene since 1995.
Michael Broderick is a lifelong musician with a master’s degree in piano performance from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and extensive graduate study in ethnomusicology at the University of Maryland, College Park.
A passionate performer of Celtic music, Michael plays fiddle, mandolin, Irish flute, and Irish
tenor banjo. Since moving to West Virginia in 1995, he has performed with several popular
regional bands, including Sangrun, Wolf Creek Session, and Aurora Celtic.
He has attended Irish music workshops and festivals across North America—including events in
Seattle, Asheville, Lunenburg (Nova Scotia), Goderich (Ontario), Albuquerque, and the Augusta
Festival in Elkins, West Virginia. Michael has recorded three albums with Aurora Celtic and one
with Wolf Creek Session.
In addition to his work in traditional music, Michael recently retired after two decades as a
church musician, where he played both piano and organ. He is also a member of the
Renaissance ensemble Marsh Mountain Consort, performing on treble and tenor viola da
gamba.
During the pandemic, Michael took up podorythmie—a form of seated foot percussion from
Québec—which he finds both fun and excellent for mental and physical fitness.
