Aurora Celtic

Celtic Ensemble

Aurora Celtic plays high-energy original and ancestral music blending Appalachian, Irish, Scottish, and Eastern European traditions. Founders Alice Fleischman and Michael Broderick, joined by Andrew Nelson and Chris Bern, are acclaimed multi-instrumentalists. Their three recordings have aired on NPR’s Thistle & Shamrock and reflect a dynamic fusion of folk traditions.

From the hills of West Virginia, Aurora Celtic plays a high energy blend of original and ancestral music on traditional strings and Irish flutes that bridges the cultures of Scotland, Ireland, Appalachia, and Eastern Europe.    Founding band members Alice Fleischman and Michael Broderick are multi-instrumentalists who have played throughout the Mid-Atlantic states, at the Kennedy Center, and in Europe. Along with current bandmates, guitarist Andrew Nelson and bassist Chris Bern, their sound merges Appalachian-Celtic and World music.    The band has three recordings: “Edge of the World” (2010), “Crows in the Kitchen” (2012), and their 2017 release “In Full Flight.” Tracks from all three CDs have been featured on NPR’s Thistle & Shamrock music program. Facebook

The International Festival of Flutes: People | Place | Culture, hosted by West Virginia University, takes place on lands that include the ancestral territories of the Shawnee, Lenape (Delaware), Haudenosaunee (Seneca, Cayuga, Onondaga, Oneida, Mohawk, Tuscarora), Cherokee, and many other Indigenous peoples.

We honor and recognize the Indigenous Nations and communities who have stewarded this region since time immemorial, and on whose ancestral lands we gather today to celebrate diverse musical traditions and cultural expressions from around the world.
